1. The Internet was first created in the 1960s by the US military, although it was an evolution over a period of years.
2. Within 5 years the internet had reached 50 million users. This is compared with 38 years for radio and 13 years for television to achieve the same figure. It is now around 2 billion users.
3. Although in developed countries more than 75% of the population is active online, the figure worldwide is only 20%.
4. 18 countries have no internet access at all.
5. The average length of an internet session is 51 minutes.
6. The name “world wide web” was first used in 1990.
7. Men make up 70% of internet users.
8. 80% of the pictures stored on the web are of naked women.
9. There are around a billion websites. A large percentage are commercial with cheap appliances being a big area but also general retail accounting for a lot of pages.
